Support Your Local Farmers' Markets

It’s that time of year again when we can look forward to fresh, tasty and sweet produce grown right here in our own Garden State.

If you are a member of a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture and are about to start receiving your weekly share of farm fresh fruit and vegetables, congratulations! That is such a great decision as it supports local farmers and you get to receive fresh, delicious produce every week!

If you haven’t yet committed to any particular farm for your produce, it may not be too late. Check out the Jersey Fresh website at http://www.jerseyfresh.nj.gov/ . Jersey Fresh is part of the New Jersey Division of Agriculture. Here you can find out what farms are offering CSA shares and all the details.

You can also find out the location and day the local farmers’ markets will be held. If you are interested in organic, specifically, the certified organic farms are also listed on the website along with recipes, nutrition information, food safety guidelines and much more. For instance, Summit’s Farmer’s Market started in April and is every Sunday morning from 8 to 1.  Most of the other towns will start in June and I know that there is a farmers market in Morristown all winter long as well.

It’s such a treat each week to find out what fruits and vegetables are in abundance. Pretty soon they will harvest strawberries and blueberries; my personal favorites. There is nothing sweeter than organic strawberries! Stock up and freeze them for smoothies and to drop in pitchers of ice cold water this summer. You can pick up free range eggs and meats, flowers and plants, and there are also vendors that offer smoothies, baked goods and homemade products. Feel free to bring your kids and dogs; the vibe is very welcoming.

There is a reason New Jersey is called The Garden State and now is the best time to enjoy the over 100 different fruits and vegetables that are grown here each year. Buying produce from our own New Jersey farmers is good for our bodies, our economy and the health of our communities!
